Pallet Rack Step Beam
Pallet rack step beam also called cross beam, lipped beam or step-deck beam. Step beams are used to connect the uprights and are fully secured in place to ensure that pallets are stored safely and securely.
Step beam is a common type of pallet rack beam. It is usually roll formed from one piece and designed with an inward-facing "step" or lip along the bottom edge with the connector welded to each end of the beam.
The purpose of the step is to support the wire mesh decking, drop-in panels, clip-in pallet, plywood sheets and other solid surface materials to help maintain a flat storage surface area and keep the support flush with the top of the beam and prevent them from sliding off.
Features of Pallet Rack Step Beam
1. Design & Structure
* Inward lip (step): A small ledge (usually ½" to 1" deep) runs along the bottom flange.
* Rolled steel construction: Made from formed steel for durability.
* Standard sizes: Typically 3" to 6" in height, with varying lengths (e.g., 8 ft, 10 ft, 12 ft).
2. Purpose of the Step
* Holds decking in place (wire mesh decking, particle board, or steel panels).
* Prevents pallets from sliding off when loaded.
* Adds rigidity to the beam structure.
3. Common Applications
✔ Warehouse storage systems
✔ Selective pallet racking (most common use)
✔ Light- to medium-duty loads (typically 2,000–8,000 lbs per pair)
Installation Tips for Pallet Rack Step Beam
Ensure the step faces inward (toward the rack center) to hold decking securely.
Use beam safety pins (clips/locks) to prevent accidental dislodging.
Check load ratings—longer beams have lower capacities.
Add wire mesh or plywood if storing small items to prevent falls.
When to Choose Pallet Rack Step Beam?
You need decking support (wire mesh decking, particle board, or steel panels).
Your loads are under 8,000 lbs per pair.
You want a cost-effective solution for standard storage racking.
